Step by Step: What Happens From Consultation to Final Restoration
Most patients arrive at a cosmetic consultation with a general sense that something has shifted in their smile — but no clear picture of what treatment actually involves. The process is both more straightforward and more customizable than most people assume, and walking through it sequentially removes most of the ambiguity.
At Nolan & Freund, the clinical sequence follows a consistent arc regardless of which procedure is involved.
The first appointment is purely diagnostic. Dr. Nolan or Dr. Freund conducts an oral exam, reviews digital X-rays, and in many cases takes cone beam CT images for a three-dimensional view of tooth and jaw structure. An intraoral camera captures detailed photographs of areas that are difficult to see in a standard mirror. From these records, the doctors build an accurate clinical picture of your existing tooth structure, gum health, and bite mechanics before recommending anything.
The second step — and for most patients the first appointment that feels concrete — is the treatment plan presentation. The doctor walks you through each recommended procedure, shows you comparative imaging, and provides a realistic timeline and cost estimate. You leave knowing exactly what happens next, how many appointments it takes, and what the investment will be.
The Procedures Themselves
Porcelain veneers begin with a preparation appointment. The doctor removes a thin layer of enamel — typically 0.3 to 0.7 millimeters — from each tooth receiving a veneer, to make room for the porcelain shell. Impressions go to a dental laboratory. You wear temporary veneers for one to two weeks while the permanent restorations are fabricated. At the bonding appointment, the final veneers are placed, adjusted for bite and shade, and cemented. Two to three appointments total.
CEREC same-day crowns work differently. Digital impressions feed directly into an in-office CAD/CAM milling unit. The ceramic crown is fabricated while you wait — typically in under two hours — and bonded at the same appointment. No temporary crown, no second visit. For Northfield patients who travel the short distance along Willow Road to reach Glenview, completing a crown restoration in one trip has obvious appeal.
Teeth whitening uses either an in-office session — carbamide or hydrogen peroxide gel activated under a controlled light source — or a take-home kit with custom trays fabricated from impressions. In-office whitening produces results in a single visit. Take-home treatment requires consistent application over seven to fourteen days.
Cosmetic bonding applies composite resin directly to a tooth, sculpted freehand and cured with a UV light. It happens in one appointment, requires little to no enamel removal, and is the most reversible cosmetic option.
Good Candidates and Those Who Need a Different Path
Candidacy starts with oral health. Active decay or gum disease gets treated before cosmetic work begins. Beyond that, the relevant factors are your enamel thickness, bite mechanics, and the nature of what you want to address.
Veneers suit teeth that are chipped, discolored, or slightly misaligned with adequate enamel remaining. Significant enamel erosion may indicate crowns as a better structural solution. Whitening addresses extrinsic and mild intrinsic staining — it does not alter the color of existing crowns, bridges, or bonded restorations, so mismatched work may become more visible post-whitening.
Patients in Northfield tend to ask about longevity. Porcelain veneers typically last 10 to 20 years with proper care. CEREC crowns carry similar longevity. Cosmetic bonding may require touch-up work after five to seven years. These are long-term investments, and the doctors present them that way.
Patients with heavy bruxism are candidates for veneers only if a night guard is part of the plan. Patients with significant malocclusion may need orthodontic work before cosmetic layering is appropriate.
Life After Your Final Appointment
Sensitivity following whitening or veneer preparation resolves within a few days. After the final bonding or crown placement, most patients report that the most significant adjustment is behavioral — they smile without hesitation, stop avoiding cameras, and approach conversations without the low-level self-consciousness that had become habitual.
Maintenance is straightforward: regular professional cleanings, a non-abrasive toothpaste, and a night guard if bruxism is a factor. Some patients return for a whitening touch-up every year or two. The foundation work — veneers and crowns — requires no special maintenance beyond standard oral hygiene.
Questions Northfield Patients Ask
Q: How many appointments will I need, and how far is the drive from Northfield?
A: From Northfield, the drive along Willow Road to the Glenview office takes approximately five to seven minutes. Veneer treatment typically requires two to three appointments of 45 to 90 minutes each. CEREC crowns and cosmetic bonding are completed in a single appointment. The initial consultation runs about 60 minutes.
Q: I'm in my mid-60s. Is cosmetic dentistry still appropriate for someone my age?
A: There is no upper age limit for cosmetic dentistry, and patients in their 60s and 70s represent a meaningful share of the veneer and whitening cases at this practice. The clinical evaluation focuses on gum health, bone stability, and enamel condition — not age. If those factors are solid, the pathway to cosmetic treatment is the same as for a patient 20 years younger.
