What the Results Actually Look Like — and What Holds Patients Back

Cosmetic dental treatment produces tangible, documented outcomes. Patients who complete veneer treatment stop covering their mouths in conversation. People who finish a whitening course make eye contact more readily. The person who spent years directing attention away from a chipped or uneven tooth simply stops thinking about it. These patterns repeat across patients and demographics.

And yet the majority of people who consider cosmetic dental care spend months or years not pursuing it. The hesitation is rarely about the procedures themselves. For many Niles patients — a community with a significant older population and residents who received their early dental care in an era when patient comfort was secondary — the hesitation is rooted in a history of appointments that were uncomfortable, rushed, or poorly communicated.

Nolan & Freund built their practice around a different model. Dr. Mike Nolan and Dr. Chad Freund explain each step before they begin. They do not treat questions as delays. They offer oral sedation for patients who want it. The practice has operated this way for over 60 years, and the patient retention rate reflects it.

Which Procedure Addresses Which Problem

Not every concern about a smile calls for the same treatment. The right match between problem and procedure matters both for outcome quality and for cost-effectiveness.

Porcelain veneers are the broadest cosmetic solution. They correct staining that whitening cannot address, chips and fractures, minor crowding, worn or shortened edges, and gaps. A standard veneer treatment covers the upper anterior teeth — typically six to ten — and permanently transforms that part of the smile. Veneers are not reversible; the enamel preparation is permanent. The result lasts 10 to 20 years with proper care.

Teeth whitening addresses extrinsic and some intrinsic staining through peroxide chemistry. It does not alter tooth shape, fill chips, or change the color of existing crowns or bonded restorations. For patients with predominantly stain-related concerns and otherwise acceptable tooth form, whitening is a high-return, low-commitment starting point.

CEREC same-day crowns restore structurally compromised teeth in a single appointment. The in-office milling unit fabricates a ceramic crown from digital impressions in under two hours. No temporary, no lab waiting period, no second trip. For Niles patients, the drive to the Glenview office via Milwaukee Avenue and Waukegan Road runs about eight minutes from Golf Road — and a single-appointment procedure means making that trip once.

Cosmetic bonding uses tooth-colored composite resin to repair individual chips, close gaps, and reshape specific teeth. It is reversible, requires no anesthetic in most cases, and is the most affordable cosmetic entry point. One appointment, freehand work, and lasting results when maintained.

Clear aligners address mild to moderate crowding and spacing issues with a series of removable trays. No metal brackets, no dietary restrictions, and a treatment timeline that fits around a working schedule.

The Clinical Prerequisites — Who Is Ready and Who Is Not

All cosmetic procedures require a foundation of healthy gum tissue and decay-free teeth. Active periodontal disease or untreated cavities get addressed before cosmetic work begins.

Niles carries a higher proportion of older residents than many neighboring suburbs, and the question of age comes up frequently. There is no clinical age limit for cosmetic dentistry. The evaluation focuses on gum tissue health, bone density, and enamel condition — factors that do not automatically deteriorate with age and that the doctors assess at the first consultation. Patients in their 70s who maintain solid oral health are as viable candidates for veneers and whitening as patients in their 40s.

Patients with heavy grinding or clenching habits are candidates for veneers provided they also wear a custom night guard. Without that protection, porcelain fractures under bruxism forces. The doctors screen for this during the initial examination.

Patients with untreated gum disease, significant enamel loss, or teeth requiring orthodontic correction before veneers sit properly are not currently candidates — but those conditions set a sequence, not a permanent barrier.

What the Procedures Feel Like

Teeth whitening is the cosmetic option with the lowest physical barrier. An in-office session involves placing a peroxide gel on tooth surfaces and activating it under a controlled light. The appointment takes about an hour. Post-treatment sensitivity, if it occurs, resolves within 24 hours.

Cosmetic bonding requires little to no preparation in most cases. The doctor sculpts composite resin on the tooth and cures it with a UV light. Most patients describe the process as closer to a sculpting session than a dental procedure.

Veneer preparation involves local anesthetic before the doctor removes a thin enamel layer from each tooth. The familiar sensations of dental work are present — vibration, pressure, suction. The experience changes significantly when the patient knows exactly what comes next at each step. That communication is not incidental at Nolan & Freund; it is how both doctors operate.

CEREC crown appointments include anesthetic and run about two hours. Patients who opt for oral sedation find the time passes without difficulty.

Questions Niles Patients Ask

Q: I have significant dental anxiety. Do you offer sedation for cosmetic procedures specifically?

A: Yes. Nolan & Freund provides oral sedation for patients who find appointments difficult — including for cosmetic procedures. You take a prescribed medication before the appointment, and the doctors monitor you throughout. A companion needs to drive you home afterward. Call (847) 724-6222 to ask about sedation before your first visit so the team can plan the appointment accordingly.

Q: I'm in my mid-70s and interested in whitening and possibly veneers. Is that realistic given my age?

A: It is realistic, and more common than most patients expect. The doctors evaluate gum health, existing restoration stability, and bone support — not age. Patients in their 70s who maintain solid oral health move through the same clinical pathway as patients decades younger. The consultation will give you a clear picture of what is achievable for your specific teeth.
